How necklace lengths are measured
Necklace lengths are measured in inches, following the US standard — this is how all Heirpearl chains are specified. For reference, 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
The length refers to the full circumference of the chain when clasped. The pendant hangs at the midpoint of that length.
Our most popular length is 18" — it sits just below the collarbone and flatters most necklines. If you're unsure, start here.
Standard Necklace Length Chart
| Length | Metric | Where it falls | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16" | 40 cm | High on the neck — choker style | Low necklines, minimalist style |
| 18" | 45 cm | Base of the neck — our default | All necklines, most flattering universally |
| 20" | 50 cm | Just below the collarbone | V-necks, open collars, layering |
| 22" | 55 cm | 2" below the collarbone | Higher necklines, elegant casual wear |
| 24" | 60 cm | Above the chest | Statement pendants, layered looks |
| 30" | 76 cm | Mid-chest | Long lockets, dramatic layering |
Choosing the right length
- Our default is 18" — it works on almost every neckline and is the most common choice for initial pendants, engraved bars, and name necklaces.
- Consider your pendant size. A larger, heavier pendant wears better on an 18"–20" chain. A delicate disc or initial charm is beautiful at 16"–18".
- Chain style affects the feel. Cable and satellite chains feel lighter and more delicate. Box chains have a more structured, defined presence. Both are available depending on your design.
- Layering? Space your chains at least 2" apart — for example, 16" + 18" or 18" + 20" — so they don't tangle.
